Well, if you're dealing with ethnic hair types, I'd highly recommend Mizani. I have a friend who went to beauty school and now does hair relaxers for black hair textures and she wholeheartedly recommends the Mizani as the best. A lye relaxer is best. Don't get anything labeled "no lye".

I prefer to use Design Essentials and Nairobi. Nairobi is especially spectacular for really tight curls, waves, and resistant hair.
