Should I put oil on my hair before straightening it?

My hair gets damaged from the intense heat of the flat iron, I recently had to get four inches cut off of my hair because it was dry and brittle at the ends. I use hot olive oil treatment once a week on my hair, but it still become frizzy after straightening. Would putting oil (olive, almond, coconut, etc) on it right before using a flat iron help?

I just talked to my stylist about this, and she suggested that I use Tresemme Heat Tamer Protective Spray. I bought some a couple of weeks ago, and I spray a light coat on my hair before putting the iron on it. So far so good. The Tresemme spray is really really light, so you don't even know that it's there. And I have no fly-aways and frizz since I began using it.

Your salon will try to sell you some $15/bottle spray. But the Tresemme spray (which you can get at Walmart or any discount store that carries Tresemme products) only costs $3. And it works great--as good as what my stylist used in her salon.

Another hint: my stylist told me to quit using Pantene products, because Pantene has so much protein in it that it makes your hair brittle. She suggested that I switch to Clairol Herbal Essense products for color treated hair--I have hi-lights. I'm amazed at how soft my hair is now, since I started using the Tresemme spray and Clairol shampoo and conditioner. It's great having a hair stylist who will suggest items that are low cost and available at any discount store.

There is special hot-iron oil that you can put in your hair prior to straightening. Don't use food oils.

There is a syrum that you can use on your hair that will help protect it and keep it from becoming frizzy ... There's actually a whole line of products that help with this....I've used it and I love it! You put it on your damp hair before straightening and it protects against heat damage, makes your hair softer, and less straw-like. It works!!

If you put it on before, it'll be like frying your hair with oil and it'll be more frizzy. Try putting it on after you straighten it so if it does become frizzy, the oil will tame and calm it down.

For best results, absolutely. I use oil all the time before straightening my hair and it works out so much better and it gets my hair straighter than without it.

I have this spray that I put on my hair called Silk Elements. It's a heat protection spay. It says that you can use it with any heat appliance. If you have any further questions you can email me at supavye_na_010@yahoo.com. Good Luck!

I don't recommend doing that because when the oil heats up it will fry your hair and damage it. You can use some water based conditioner instead.

There are products made specifically for protecting hair from the heat of styling tools. Now, if you are a woman of color and your hair is on the course/dry side, there is this product call Fantasia Hair Serum. You can get it at Sally's Beauty supply. Its in a pink bottle with a rounded top. Its about $8. You only need maybe a dime size amount for your hair. It protects your hair from the heat and makes the hair super shiny,

Another product I've tried is Straight Solution from Hask. Its in a yellow bottle with a red top. Its smooths, shines and keeps hair from getting frizzy. Suitable for all hair types. I also got this product from Sally's beauty supply.
