Straightening hair - how to get it to 'stick out'?

Have longish hair and straighten it (have both slim and normal straightening irons).

Now, I want to straighten it, but so it also has some bits that stick out (also straight).

My hairdresser told me to put hair spray on first to get that look... only problem is... it sets really hard and isn't then very good for straightening!

Any ideas?

sometimes i use a big roller brush, if you know what i'm talking about, it really helps. also don't use any salon hair sprays they are a waste of money and make it worst. i get my hair done all the time and my best friend is a hair dresser i'm pretty sure i know what i'm talking about. blow dry the parts/pieces you want to stick out and it can make it exactly how you want it to. you can go to wal-mart or target wherever store like those is closer and get ausse or treseme' hairsprays and get a mousse to put in your hair when it is wet. trust me i promice you it always works if you do it exactly perfect ;) if you're still having problems let me know and i can talk to my friend katie, hairstylist, and she can most definatly help you.

Try buying a hair spray with less hold or a flexible hold.

well, u could always buy those hair sprays that are "straightner safe". that way, it doesnt 'freeze' and it is safe to use! hope this helps!

get a hairspray with the numbers on the front, i think suave. get a 3, 4 at the absolute highest. 2 even. maybe 1. just try 2 or 3 at the start.

well, i know that pantene (i think)has this texurizing wax stuff that if you put it on the ends of your hair and straighten, well, it basically does what you want. just go to walmart and try a bunch of different products until you find one you like. you might also want to try Vo5 products. they are really good.

while its still wet (like after shower) put hair volume gell in it,and pull it out from the roots down,it may kinda hurt but,live with it ;)

then when its done air drying straighten it,it may be a bit difficult but its easier than hair sprying it first.Then use your hair spray AFTER for more volume.like pulling it up and spraying it.

I do this to my hair alot,I style mine the grunge/emo/goth or whatever look you want to call it,and thats what I do.
